Minnesota Exercises Michael Cuddyer's 2011 Option

The Minnesota Twins announced today that the club has exercised Michael Cuddyer’s 2011 option valued at $10.5 million.

The option is part of the four-year deal Cuddyer signed in 2008. The right fielder will make $8.5 million in 2010, the third year of the $33.5 million pact.

JJ Putz to Detroit Tigers Makes Too Much Sense Not To Happen

Last off season, JJ Putz was the best move the Tigers didn't make.

If not for an injury to Fernando Perez that killed a three-way deal involving the Rays, JJ Putz may have been hamstringing Detroit in 2009 and not the Mets, and Edwin Jackson may have formed a dominant pitching tandem with Felix Hernandez instead of Justin Verlander.

Putz became a free agent today when New York declined his nine million dollar option. This time around, the Tigers have much less to lose in taking a shot on the Trenton native and former Michigan wolverine.

Should The Seattle Mariners Re-Sign JJ Putz?

The New York Mets have reportedly said that they will not pick up the $8.1 million option for JJ Putz next season.

They have instead opted to buy his contract out for $1 million, making him a free agent.

It was just one season ago that Putz was considered a top closer in the American League. He was also the centerpiece of the trade that netted the Seattle Mariners CF Franklin Gutierrez, 1B Mike Carp, OF Endy Chavez, P Garrett Olson, and INF Ronny Cedeno (later used in a trade for SS Jack Wilson, and SP Ian Snell), among others.

Trade Evaluation: Carlos Gomez for JJ Hardy

Now that everyone is starting to calm down over the initial reports of dealing fan-favorite Carlos Gomez for JJ Hardy, it's time to evaluate the trade from several angles.

Twins

This trade from a Twins perspective is good. While Gomez is one of the best defensive outfielders in the league, he yielded playing time in center field to Denard Span and when Delmon Young started hitting late in the season, Gomez saw seldom playing time.

A Hardy Improvement: Twins Trade Carlos Gomez to Brewers for J.J. Hardy

Anyone who knows me knows I am a big J.J. Hardy fan. I have always liked the way he has played.

That didn’t take long at all.

Minnesota Twins Deal Carlos Gomez to Milwaukee

On Friday morning, the Milwaukee Brewers traded shortstop J.J. Hardy to the Minnesota Twins for outfielder Carlos Gomez.

Gomez likely has the inside track to replace free agent Mike Cameron in center field for Milwaukee and doesn't turn 24 until December. He batted only .229 last year but is one of the fastest players in all of baseball.

The Twins and Brewers have reportedly agreed to a trade that would send Carlos Gomez to Milwaukee in exchange for JJ Hardy.

Kansas City Royals Trade Mark Teahen To Chicago White Sox

It only took a couple of hours until after the World Series ended to get the hot stove cooking.

Today, the Kansas City Royals traded 3B/OF Mark Teahen to the Chicago White Sox for 2B Chris Getz and 3B Josh Fields.

I don’t get this trade for either team. First, let’s start with the White Sox.

While I give White Sox GM Kenny Williams credit for being one of the few general managers in today’s economic climate who is willing to take on salary, sometimes I question what he is thinking.

Kenny Williams hasn’t waited long to begin reshaping the White Sox.
