The San Diego Padres were one of the biggest disappointments during the 2015 season, and their underwhelming play cost manager Bud Black his job. After also letting interim manager Pat Murphy go at the end of the year, the Padres are beginning to set their sights on a handful of potential permanent replacements.

After just two seasons as the manager of the Seattle Mariners, both without a playoff appearance, Lloyd McClendon is without a job.

Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times first reported McClendon would be relieved of his duties due largely to a change in the balance of power in Seattle's front office. Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal confirmed the firing.

The offseason officially started for the New York Yankees Tuesday night after they lost the American League Wild Card Game to the Houston Astros, but most of the league already had its eyes firmly set on the rebuilding winter months. 

The Washington Nationals fired manager Matt Williams on Monday, according to a team release, after a tumultuous 83-79 season that saw the squad miss the postseason and severely underachieve after being preseason contenders for a World Series title. Thus began the search for the club's next manager.

World Series dreams are still alive and well for 10 different postseason teams across Major League Baseball, but the rest of the league has already turned its attention toward what promises to be a busy offseason.

There's nothing quite like late September baseball. The air is crisper, the ball makes a different sound when it comes off the bat, every game takes on increased importance and teams and players alike are jockeying for position in races for playoff spots and individual awards.

While all of that is enough to keep much of the baseball universe's focus squarely on the action, it hasn't kept the rumor mill from looking ahead and beginning to pick up steam in advance of the upcoming offseason.

This MLB season has produced a youth infusion unlike any other in recent memory, with almost every team calling up their top prospects and watching them make an immediate impact.

While studs like Kris Bryant, Miguel Sano, Carlos Correa and Noah Syndergaard have already broken through to the big leagues, more prospects will find their ways in the majors when rosters expand. Many September call-ups will have the opportunity to influence the playoff races in each respective league and make a positive first impression moving forward. 

The Aug. 31 Major League Baseball waiver trade deadline is less than a week away, but teams prepping for their playoff push still have time to land a player that could help with that.

Many big-name players were taken off the market before July 31, but several players are still available to help fill a necessary void. Plus, some teams would be more than happy to let one of their players go who may have a hefty contract on the books.

Houston Astros All-Star pitcher Dallas Keuchel has expressed his desire to remain with the club and is already engaging in talks for a new multiyear contract.
