New York Mets

The New York Mets season began Monday afternoon at Citi Field against the Florida Marlins. Everyone from their fans to others around baseball have had concerns about the Mets' 2010 season due to early injuries, as well as a suspect starting rotation. For at least one day, however, those concerns were put on hold and the Mets came away with an opening day victory.

As I did following the Yankees opener in Boston, after each game I plan to post a quick recap.

I am lucky enough to be a Mets fan living in Queens. I’m lucky enough to have the means to buy a nice ticket package every season. I’m lucky enough to work for a company that has season tickets to the Mets.

All those factors contribute to the fact that I go to a lot of Mets games every year.

I was at Opening Day last season, a game that was supposed to be fun. A new stadium, a new season. A chance to leave behind the bad taste we all had in our mouths following 2007 & 2008.

It's Opening Day for 26 teams around Major League Baseball. Among those teams with players lacing up their cleats for the first time this season is the New York Mets.

More than 40,000 fans showed up at Citi Field to usher in the 2010 campaign against the NL East rival Florida Marlins.

New York came into the season with muted expectations but with a point to prove.

In what was an unseasonably warm 70 degree afternoon at Citi Field in New York, the Mets bats were just as hot, putting together a good offensive performance to back up ace pitcher Johan Santana's solid outing.

The Mets strung together nine hits, and were helped out by three Marlins errors, en route to an opening day win. It was a relieving result to many anxious Mets fans, who don't really know what this season may hold.

Well those fans can rest easy tonight with their team jumping out to a 1-0 record. But what does the future hold for this team?

There was a lot of negativity surrounding the New York Mets this spring, but one of the bright spots was right-handed pitching phenom Jenrry Mejia.

Mejia burst on the scene this spring and was the talk of Mets camp. In 17 innings, Mejia had a 1.59 ERA and struck out nine while only walking three.

Mejia’s performance was so impressive that the Mets have decided to keep him on the major league roster to start the season.

Opening Day optimism, there is nothing like it in sports.  Cubs fans have thrived on it for over 100 years.

This is, by far, my favorite time of the year on the sports calendar.  The snow has melted, the grass is turning green, and I can start to hear the crack of the bat and roar of the crowd.

Both New York teams have a new starting outfielder on their squads this year.

Both are upgrades over their 2009 counterparts.

The Mets signed free agent Jason Bay while the Yankees pulled off an old-fashioned trade as they acquired Curtis Granderson from the Detroit Tigers in a three-team, seven-player swap.

That trade also involved the Arizona Diamondbacks, and appears to be good for all three teams involved.

The New York Mets will start the 2010 baseball season with two of their most influential hitters on the DL.

Carlos Beltran will not resume any baseball activities until April 10 at the earliest, and even then it could be anything between four and eight weeks until he's back in the everyday lineup.

Jose Reyes, meanwhile, will be on the sidelines until at least April 11, after the Mets put him on the DL retroactive to March 26.

The Mets can win 90 games this season.

Omar Minaya wasn't lying when he said that on a recent radio interview.
