To Trade Vazquez Or Not To Trade…That Is the Question?

What in the world will the Atlanta Braves decide to do with Javier Vazquez?

That is the burning question surrounding Braves Nation on the MLB Hot Stove this week at the GM meetings .

Vazquez, 33, is coming off a career year and posted one of the best seasons of any major league pitcher in 2009.

Hot Rumors Follow Hot Stove as Phillies and Others Try To Improve

Less than a week after the New York Yankees beat the Philadelphia Phillies in six games to win their 27th World Championship, the Hot Stove League has begun in earnest.

Even before the general managers meeting in Chicago on Nov. 10-11, trades have been made in the fresh offseason.

The Pirates and the Rays made a deal on Nov. 3, with Tampa Bay sending second baseman Akinori Iwamura to Pittsburgh for reliever Jesse Chavez. Two days later, the Marlins traded outfielder Jeremy Hermida to Boston for left-hander Hunter Jones.

Philadelphia Phillies-Florida Marlins: More Surgeries On Tap For This Week

As we found out last week, tis the season for surgeries.

This week there are three more surgeries set for some notable players. Let’s take a look at who is going under the knife.

Raul Ibanez – Ibanez had surgery today to fix a sports hernia. This is not surprising as Ibanez was playing in pain the entire second half of the season.

This was evident by Ibanez’s rather poor second half.

Former New York Met Victor Zambrano's Mother Kidnapped

Some sad and alarming news to report this morning out of Venezuela.

According to the Associated Press , the mother of former Mets pitcher Victor Zambrano was kidnapped from the pitcher’s property late last night.

Details of the incident are still very sketchy.

Philadelphia Phillies Decline Pedro Feliz's Option

The defending National League champions will have a new starting third baseman in 2010.

Yesterday, the Philadelphia Phillies declined the $5.5 million option for 2010 on Pedro Feliz, thus making him a free agent. Feliz hit .266/.308/.386 last year, while playing gold glove caliber defense at third base for the Phillies.

This is why the Phillies are going to be good for years to come. Instead of being satisfied with what they have and picking up Feliz’s option, they decline the option and look to improve themselves.

2010 New York Mets Bullpen Breakdown: Pedro Feliciano

Through all the twists and turns the New York Mets have taken over the past four years, one factor has always remained constant.

That particular factor is relief pitcher, Pedro Feliciano .

Feliciano, who has been a mainstay in the Mets bullpen since his second tour of duty with the team began in 2006, has proven to be one of the most reliable relievers in the National League over the past couple of years.

The 2009 season was no exception.

Phillies and Dodgers: The Stove Is Already Warming Up for Next Year's Race

While literally millions of New Yorkers (including myself) were busy celebrating the 27th New York Yankee World Championship up and down downtown New York's Canyon of Heroes, the rest of Major League Baseball began offseason business as usual.

The National League Champion Phillies moved quickly in picking up the 2010 club-option on their lefty ace Cliff Lee.

Lee, who went 7-4 with a 3.39 ERA in 12 starts for Philadelphia during the latter half of 2009, will be owed $9 million in the final year of his contract.

Should The Seattle Mariners Re-Sign JJ Putz?

The New York Mets have reportedly said that they will not pick up the $8.1 million option for JJ Putz next season.

They have instead opted to buy his contract out for $1 million, making him a free agent.

It was just one season ago that Putz was considered a top closer in the American League. He was also the centerpiece of the trade that netted the Seattle Mariners CF Franklin Gutierrez, 1B Mike Carp, OF Endy Chavez, P Garrett Olson, and INF Ronny Cedeno (later used in a trade for SS Jack Wilson, and SP Ian Snell), among others.

Cliff Lee, Brandon Webb Have Their Options Picked Up

The hot stove is on FIRE!!!

The champagne hasn’t dried yet in the Yankee locker room and we have already seen Mark Teahen and JJ Hardy get traded and the Angels re-sign Bobby Abreu.

This afternoon, we got some more hot stove news as two of the premier pitchers in baseball had their options picked up. One move was a no-brainer and the other move I was a little surprised by.

First, the no-brainer.

Marlins Trade Hermida To Red Sox: A Sign Of Things To Come

If you thought the “haves” had an advantage in baseball last winter, you ain’t seen nothing yet.

In a trade that is a foreshadowing of how this winter is going to play out in baseball, the Florida Marlins sent former first-round pick Jeremy Hermida to the Boston Red Sox for LHP’s Hunter Jones and Jose Alvarez.

Due to the economy, these are the types of trades you are going to see this winter. Teams who can’t afford to wait on young players or can’t afford a player’s salary will be forced to trade them to teams who can.
