Cole Hamels went 14-10 with a 3.09 ERA in 2008. He ended the year a World Series hero.

Cole Hamels went 10-11 with a 4.32 ERA in 2009. He ended the year a World Series bust.

Naturally, any fan seeing this would think that Hamels had some sort of huge fall from grace; he must have done more wrong in 2009 than 2008.

The media was all over this line of thinking, particularly in the playoffs (when, admittedly, he did struggle, unlike his excellent 2008 postseason).

Not so fast.

Harry LeRoy Halladay III, welcome to the fold.  It has certainly been a whirlwind few days for the Phillies and their fans.

Boy Genius Ruben Amaro Jr. or RAJ as he is referred to, finally got his man.  The love that RAJ has for Halladay is remarkable, the way they looked at each other during the press conference was like watching a poorly made romantic comedy.  These guys have a serious "Bromance" going on. 

The Phillies’ recent trade for Roy Halladay has been the talk of the town.

They acquired baseball’s premier pitcher. The only pitcher who could be better than Halladay right now would be Tim Lincecum.

The Phillies made a risky move trading away their ace pitcher Cliff Lee, but that makes the deal all the more interesting. Will the big risk equal a big reward? Or will it go down in flames?

The hand-wringing that has occurred over the last three days across the Philadelphia region has now subsided. The deal is done, and now all that is left is the debate over whether it was the correct one.

For all of the complaints about the enormity in terms of prospects given up and the departure of Cliff Lee in the process, this deal is positive for the Phillies' future.

Now that the dust has settled, Roy Halladay is a Philadelphia Phillie. 

For a franchise that has started the likes of Jon Lieber, Kevin Millwood, and Robert Person on Opening Day, that previous sentence is a pleasant sight to the eyes of Phillies fans.

After a few days of hammering out physicals and filing paperwork, the Phillies announced on Wednesday that they have traded Cliff Lee to the Seattle Mariners, and will hold a press conference at 5:00 EST to announce that they acquired Roy Halladay from Toronto.

The Phillies also acquire Phillippe Aumont, J.C. Ramirez, and Tyson Gillies from the Mariners along with $6 million from the Blue Jays. Philadelphia sends Kyle Drabek, Michael Taylor and Travis d'Arnaud to the Jays, who ship Taylor to Oakland for Brett Wallace.

First, a recap of the supposed three-four team deal that is supposed to take place once all the i's are dotted and t's crossed:

Preface: Cliff Lee was undeniably awesome in most of his starts for the Phillies in 2009. 

Unfortunately, the Phillies are not owned by Comcast Spectacor and do not have an endless revenue stream.  Phillies fans must also realize that Ruben Amaro, Jr. would like to keep his job past 2010.  So, while the fans would like to sell out for 2010, RAJ must maintain the health of the franchise while still improving the current model.  He has done that this week, if all reports are indeed true. 

Let's get some housecleaning out of the way first. 

To complete the blockbuster trade that will net the Phillies their second Cy Young winner in five months, Roy Halladay has agreed to a $60 million three year contract extension with a chance at a fourth year either guaranteed or a vesting option.

Halladay took his physical early Tuesday morning, and an official announcement is expected on Wednesday in a press conference at Citizens Bank Park.

Anybody who has followed the Phillies' pursuit of Roy Halladay over the past few days is quite aware of the complexity of the proposed trades to acquire him. Several teams are directly or indirectly involved, and it's even been suggested that the full trade package be broken down into three separate two-team deals.
