The offseason is still going strong into late December.

The latest free-agent chip to fall was Shin-Soo Choo, who signed a seven-year, $130 million pact with the Texas Rangers. And while the Rangers had few options left to jump-start their offense, it’s possible the Choo deal will blow up in their face.

In missing the playoffs for only the second time since 1995, New York Yankees' general manager Brian Cashman was tasked with making sure that 2013 was just an exception to the rule.

Attention, holiday shoppers: If you're a general manager of a Major League Baseball team, there may not be much available in position players anymore, but they're not quite sold out just yet, and there still are pitchers galore ready to be plucked from the shelves in time for the new year.

As the calendar gets ready to flip, here's a rundown of the top names who remain up for grabs as either free-agent factors or trade targets.

What's the difference?

Back in April, I ranked the 10 worst MLB free-agent signings of the past decade, with a focus on two recent signings—Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton of the Los Angeles Angels—that were already in serious danger of joining them. 

The 2013 offseason has been a particularly active one. The New York Yankees let Robinson Cano walk and instead inked Brian McCann, Jacoby Ellsbury and Carlos Beltran. And on the trade front, Doug Fister and Dexter Fowler were surprisingly dealt to the Washington Nationals and Houston Astros, respectively.

Many of baseball’s top prospects are playing in the Australian, Dominican, Mexican, Puerto Rican and Venezuelan winter leagues this offseason as they look to get a head start on the 2014 season and improve their chances of cracking an Opening Day roster.
