The New York Mets are headed for their fifth-straight losing season and another summer spent in baseball oblivion.

Despite the recent sweep of the Yankees, the Mets stand at 22-30 and nine games back of the Braves in the NL East through the month of May. The Mets have finished in fourth place in each of the past four seasons and are likely to finish in that same spot this season.

The Rookie of the Year field will continue to grow as players are called up in the weeks ahead, but with two months of the MLB season in the books, the current crop has had some time to establish itself.

Having a big-time starting pitcher leading the rotation or a big-time bat in the heart of a team's lineup is a prerequisite for success in baseball.

It's the teams who have both that are the most successful.

This isn't the MLB All-Star Game, where every team must be represented.

No, we are on a quest to find the best pitcher-hitter combinations in baseball—and then figure out who truly is the best of the best.

The competition to be the second-best free agent behind Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano this upcoming offseason is two months in, and there are no clear-cut answers as of yet. Injuries to Matt Garza and Josh Johnson and Tim Lincecum's continued decline from his former dominant self have the starting pitching market full of question marks. 

The Cardinals have had a pretty amazing May to say the least. In fact, they have had the best record in Major League Baseball for a while now. And they couldn't have gotten there without the performances of each individual player.

By comparing each major player's statistics from the past 28 days to their 2012 numbers, I've attempted to measure their success against what is expected of them. 

The month of May wasn't the easiest for the Seattle Mariners. The highest highs were all but negated by the lowest lows, and multiple significant personnel changes occurred, drastically changing the look of the Mariners for the time being.

In a sport dominated by pitching, it's hard to remember a better time to be invested in the respective Cy Young races.

This a great season if you're a fan of stellar pitching, as there are a number of frontline starters who have routinely left us in awe. Having to decide on just one Cy Young candidate in each league will be an unenviable task for voters later this year.

The Minnesota Twins' process of rebuilding their farm system will take another giant step next week when Major League Baseball conducts it's annual June amateur entry draft.

A year ago, the Twins hit on many of their picks as Byron Buxton, Adam Brett Walker and D.J. Baxendale have had tremendous seasons in the lower levels of the Twins' system.

In order for the team to turn around its fortunes at the major league level, it will need to have a similar draft to provide hope and depth at several positions of need.

Buster Posey, Buster Olney and Buster Bluth from Arrested Development are all pretty successful Busters. Even Buster Brown, both the comic strip and the musician varieties, are on the list of top Busters. They are not on the list of busts, which is nothing like being a Buster.

A bust is simply defined as something or someone that had high expectations put upon them and did not meet those marks.

We’ve all been a bust once in twice in our lives, right?

With the downfall of the PED era, Major League Baseball has become more of a pitcher's league.

From starters to relievers, there are multiple pitchers who can make hitters look like fools.

However, each hurler has his own special way of doing so—a go-to pitch that generates far more whiffs than wallops.
