When we think power and baseball, our thoughts immediately drift to the steroid era, with its larger-than-life sluggers putting up video game-like home run totals.

Make no mistake about it: Baseball is still enjoying the benefits of power, but where it rests has shifted roughly 60 feet and six inches from the batter's box out to the pitcher's mound.

Welcome to the era of the power pitcher. 

The free-agent market is yet to develop, but it’s only a matter of time until the dominoes will start to fall. When they do, expect the trade market to take shape as well.

Front-of-the-rotation pitchers Max Scherzer, Jon Lester and James Shields headline this year’s crop of free-agent starters, while Pablo Sandoval and Cuban prospect Yasmany Tomas stand out among hitters in a class that’s thin on impact players.

Before we get into the hustle and bustle that is the MLB offseason, let's take a look at the landscape of Major League Baseball before the dominoes begin to fall.

Offseason power rankings are more about where each team has been, rather than where it may be headed. As you would expect, the playoff teams will comprise the top of the list. The other 20 organizations are ranked by the likelihood that they'll make it back to October.  

Major League Baseball's offseason has just begun, and already there are all sorts of rumors and speculation—and questions—surrounding a number of free agents and trade candidates, as well as teams' objectives and plans of attack.

There’s only one game remaining on this year’s Arizona Fall League schedule, but it’s a big one.

The Salt River Rafters (17-11-4) and Peoria Javelinas (15-4-3) will play in the AFL Championship Game on Saturday, beginning at 3:08 p.m. ET and airing on MLB Network/MLB.com.

With the general manager meetings getting underway Monday in Arizona, the hot-stove rumor mill is just getting started, and already the Atlanta Braves have been linked to several moves. While many teams’ rumors are rumors of addition, many of the Braves rumors thus far have been rumors of subtraction.

During the regular season, teams usually call up their top prospects to fill a role that’s been affected by injuries or productivity issues.

While those obviously aren’t relevant concerns in the offseason, teams still have to consider the futures of its top prospects when addressing roster concerns caused by free-agent departures.

More and more, pitching is dominating Major League Baseball, which means players who provide any kind of offense, and especially power, are coming at a premium on the trade front or in the free-agent market.

Big bats are getting harder and harder to come by, and those that are available tend to come with some sort of flaw or concern, be it age, injury history or contract.

That's why it's helpful to know which players who can be labeled "power hitters" are the best targets for teams to go after this offseason.

The Boston Red Sox figure to be among the most active teams in both the free-agent and trade markets this offseason.

They need to fill at least two spots in their starting rotation. They need to solidify third base. They need to bolster their bullpen, and they could decide they need a new backup catcher, too.
