The majority of MLB trades go down prior to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, but there have still been some notable moves made during the August waiver trade period.

Starting in 1986, the non-waiver trade deadline was switched from June 15 to July 31, and the August waiver period as we know it today was born.

There have been some memorable waiver trades in MLB history, including a pair of future starters being acquired as prospects in John Smoltz and Jeff Bagwell.

Another week is in the books following the July 31 MLB trade deadline, and the Boston Red Sox have enjoyed a little more time to evaluate some of the young talent contained within the organization.

Ah, the trade deadline.

It's that time of year where fans obsessively refresh Twitter and the careers of many baseball players and executives hang in the balance. 

Due to the addition of the second wild card to postseason play, the amount of teams willing to trade off notable pieces has declined. With more teams in the hunt to play in October, there are fewer impact players available on the market that buyers can go after.

After 2013 saw the BBWAA elect no one to the MLB Hall of Fame for the first time since 1996 and just the third time since 1960, three players earned the nod this year.

A pair of 300-game winners in Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine and one of the most feared sluggers of all time in Frank Thomas earned enshrinement in their first year on the ballot.

They will be joined by a trio of managers in Bobby Cox, Tony LaRussa and Joe Torre, who all rank in the top five all-time in wins.
