Tampa Bay Rays-Cession: Four Rookies to Watch As Payroll Cuts Are Announced

There is a saying that bad news doesn't get better with time. However, announcing plans to cut payroll while your team is in the middle of a division race can't be a good idea.

That's exactly what Tampa Bay Rays owner Stu Sternberg did when he announced that even if the Rays win the World Series payroll will be cut in 2011. The current estimate is that the Rays will cut this year's $72 million payroll by $15-20 million.

Ben Zobrist's Contract Will Haunt the Tampa Bay Rays When the Offseason Begins

Let me begin by saying that I am a fan of Ben Zobrist. He is a switch-hitter who can play a multitude of positions and he has a great attitude. Overall, Zobrist is a solid baseball player and a great person. However, that does not mean the Rays should have given him a three-year contract extension worth up to $30 million.

October Blueprint: A Grand Proposal For An Improved MLB Postseason System

October can't come any sooner for fans of the New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays, Minnesota Twins, and Texas Rangers. The American League has little to no excitement on the postseason hunt in September with teams like the Red Sox and White Sox playing for any realistic hope that just isn't there to be had.

Why David Price Should Be the AL All-Star Starting Pitcher

Did you see Price finish the sweep against Boston? Seriously? Even with all of Boston's injuries, they are still no offensive slouch.

David Ortiz, Kevin Youkilis, and Adrian Beltre were no match for Price. The trio was a combined 2-for-13 with five strikeouts.

The crazy thing is, Price beat them with just one pitch: his fastball. Of his 111 pitches, 99 of them were fastballs.

But one start does not an All-Star starter make. However, this does:

Twelve wins—most in the AL.

2.42 ERA—second to Cliff Lee by .08.

Tampa Bay Rays Minor League Roundup (AA and AAA)

With the first two months of the season in the books, we'll take a look at how Rays prospects have performed at the two highest levels.

Each team is loaded with talent, as the Rays feature one of the top farm systems in the game.

We'll have a look at who's off to a hot start and who's struggling, with special attention to some of the Rays' most noteworthy prospects.

AAA: Durham Bulls (31-23, First Place, IL South)

Who's Hot

Rays-Mariners Series Preview: Tampa Bay Heads West

The Rays (18-7) are off to the best start in baseball but begin a tough western road trip this week that sees them travel to Seattle, Oakland, and Anaheim.

They open up with the Mariners (11-13) on Tuesday, who come in having lost three straight after being swept at home by the Rangers.

Tampa Bay Rays Bullpen Prepares for Upgrade

As part of the Tampa Bay Rays' housekeeping after Dioner Navarro's two-game suspension, the Rays optioned long man Mike Ekstrom to AAA.

Ekstrom's spot was taken by Durham catcher Jose Lobaton.

It will be a short stay for Lobaton. Once the Oakland two-game series is concluded, Navarro will be back with the team.

Joining him will be a new reliever.

Armed and Dangerous: Tampa Bay Rays Are Wreaking Havoc in the AL

Insurance claims agents stand by. Baltimore, Boston, and Chicago are in need of disaster relief.

A tornado known as the Tampa Bay Rays has just laid waste to three stadiums in three different cities. Like a huge wrecking ball, the Rays have been demolishing anything in their path.

It doesn't look like it's going to stop any time soon.

Tampa Bay Rays-Baltimore Orioles: Matt Garza Dominates Again

The Rays' bullpen hasn't been what most would call reliable in the early going of the 2010 Major League Baseball season.

However, it appears that Rays pitcher Matt Garza has found the remedy for their troubles.

Don't let them pitch much.

For the second time in as many games, Garza relegated bullpen appearances to one inning of Rafael Soriano. Both games featured Garza pitching eight innings in a dominant fashion. Garza only gave up one earned run in each performance.

How Ben Zobrist and the Rays Are Impacted by Adam Lind's Deal with the Blue Jays

This past week, Toronto Blue Jays slugger Adam Lind signed a four-year, $18 million contract.

Lind's contract also has three option years that could bring the total to seven years and $38.5 million.

By locking him up now, the Blue Jays eliminate his three arbitration years and get cost control for the next seven seasons.

So what does this mean to the Rays?
