Francisco Rodriguez did something he has never done before as a New York Met: he recorded a five out save and it sounds like manager Jerry Manuel liked what he saw enough that he might use him to do that more often.
“Once he’s ready to go he’s shown he can pitch multiple innings and he can bounce back,” Manuel said .
This all actually started in the 20-inning game against the Cardinals. That night Manuel didn’t use K-Rod until the 19th inning, but had him warm up at least eight times. Since then Rodriguez has expressed his distaste for being abused like that (what pitcher wouldn’t?).
So last night when Manuel got Rodriguez to warm up in the 8th inning and Mejia struggled, he decided it was time to put Rodriguez in the game. Rodriguez then proceeded to record five outs to get the save and since he did it once Manuel’s logic dictates that he must be able to do it more often.
