For those of you who may already be giving up on your team, and wondering what can be done to fix your team, know this: There are solutions.
Although there are few marquee names, a solid cast is available to revamp your Nationals, Indians, Rockies, or Astros. Think about this, trade every player on your roster for whatever minor league talent you can scrape together, then go out and sign a new team, an all-star team, the all free-agent team. Here they are:
Starting Lineup
C Victor Martinez- Although not currently catching, he is clearly the best of the available "catchers by trade" candidates.
1B Chad Tracy- In one of the weaker positions, Tracy could be a solid starter and role player to insert into your new line-up.
2B Orlando Hudson- Showing this season he can still be a game changer, Hudson could be the leadoff man for your new team, as well as helping to anchor your middle infield.
SS Bobby Crosby- A tough choice here, but I go for youth and potential, and Crosby may benefit from a change in scenery.
3B Adrian Beltre- Beltre is having a down year in 2009, which may mean he will be cheaper than normal when he becomes an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. He has been a solid 25 homer man in the middle of the lineup.
LF Jason Bay- Jason Bay continues to put up quiet, but consistently good seasons. I would bat him third on this team.
CF Rick Ankiel- Not a real deep position, I take a chance on Ankiel, and hope he can show the glimpses of power on a more consistent basis.
RF Vladimir Guerrero- The veteran with the most name power of the crew, Vlad anchors my team as the captain.
Starting Pitchers
Rich Harden, John Lackey, Brad Penny, Erik Bedard, and Todd Wellemeyer- They may be a staff with a history of injuries, but they also have a history of being dominant, or at least solid contributors every night.
Relief Pitchers
Jose Valverde, Fernando Rodney, Juan Rincon, John Grabow, Scott Eyre, and Kip Wells- Definitely the weakest part of our reconstructed team. Heads up to anyone looking for bullpen help next year, there's not a lot on the market.
Bench
The overall idea here was to get guys with some versatility, speed, power, and a good left/right mix. This really is the strength of the team- Aubrey Huff, Xavier Nady, Ryan Freel, Chone Figgins, Hank Blalock, and Jason Kendall could all be starters and can all play multiple positions.
So there it is, your new team!
Remember, there's always next year.
