The 2009 NEW York Yankees Are Once Again a Big Name Team

The NEW York Yankees—out with the old and in with the new. With the recent acquisitions of "big name" players such as A.J. Burnett, CC Sabathia, and Mark Teixeira, the Yankees are beginning to show that they, as a team, are once again a "big name" team.

The Yankees, coming off a most disappointing season, are setting their sights on that precious World Series Championship, of which they have not had the honor of winning since 2000, when they defeated the Mets in the Subway Series.

Although the Yankees are showing great promise, they still have a few less than favorable obstacles to overcome.

Perhaps the most notable of these obstacles is the drama that surrounds the Yankees' star third baseman, Alex Rodriguez. Rodriguez is now notorious around the league for his admitted steroid use while playing for the Texas Rangers from 2001-2003.

Perhaps more devastating than a bad reputation around the league is Rodriguez's hip, which will be keeping him off the field for a solid six to nine weeks.

This leaves Cody Ransom as his replacement. In 33 games with the Yankees last year, Ransom hit .302 with four home runs. Although Ransom does not have the same experience as A-Rod, it will be interesting to see how this youngster performs.

The Yankees also have a reputation around the league for spending money like it grows on trees. Many teams and fans have complained about the money that the Yankees spend, and perhaps, they are correct. After all, $430 million is a lot of money to spend on three players.

From a Yankee fan's point of view, this is great news, but I certainly can see why others may get upset. Whether you like it or not, the Yankees had money, and they put it to good use.

The Yankees will be a force to reckon with this year. Playoffs here we come!
