Matt Cerrone at MetsBlog points to a report out from Beisbol Invernal, which states that Alex Cora left a winter ball game with a back injury.
No additional information on the severity of the injury is available at this time.
This certainly isn’t good news for Omar Minaya, as he has faced criticism as of late for signing the veteran utility man to such a lucrative deal.
Last season with the Mets, Cora played in 82 games while primarily filling in at shortstop for the injured Jose Reyes . In 251 at-bats, which were the most he has had since 2004, Cora hit .251 with one home run and drove in 18 runs with an OBP of.320.
This situation definitively bears watching as even if the injury is in fact a minor one there are now going to be serious questions regarding Cora’s durability.
Having a healthy Cora is essential heading into next season because the Mets really don’t know what they’re going to get out of their starting shortstop, Reyes.
