The Mets are not a healthy group right now. The team struggles to keep a group of nine guys together for more than a couple of days, as the list of injured players continues to grow.
In the last 24 hours, we have had three more additions to the injury report. Ryan Church’s hamstring, JJ Putz’s neck, and Carlos Beltran’s knee have become the latest concerns. Church and Beltran are likely day-to-day, but Putz is out indefinitely.
The Mets have depth in the outfield and on the mound, but they need to solve the problem that is hurting them everyday: shortstop. Ramon Martinez has been nothing short of terrible since he was brought up from Buffalo during the Dodgers series in Los Angeles. He has looked overmatched at the plate, and to say he has been a disappointment at shortstop would be putting it mildly.
I have an idea of a guy who would probably come cheap and would fill the void nicely.
Anyone remember Damion Easley?
He is still unemployed and has always made it clear that he has a desire to take one more shot with a contender. So, let’s bring him back and give him that shot.
Easley produced adequately when he joined the Mets before the 2007 season. He had 16 homers and 70 RBI in the two years with the club, and he provided valuable backup to many positions. A utility player that can play numerous positions is exactly what the Mets should be looking for right now.
More importantly, Easley made only nine errors during his time with the Mets and has a career .982 fielding percentage. The Mets need someone who will think defense first. I think Damion Easley would fit the mold nicely.
