Jermaine Dye hit 27 HR last season. That's tied for 37th most home runs among players in either league last year, one less than Joe Mauer and one more than Justin Upton. And he has no job.
Joe Pawlikowski did a good job breaking down why Dye doesn't have a job on FanGraphs . To recap for the lazy, he had a terrible second half and his defense is utter excrement.
Basically, Dye's a DH or nothing. Problem is, AL teams have generally sorted out their DH slots. It seems like everyone has some version of the big dude with bad knees and a boppin' bat.
Dye's on his last legs, so he's probably best used on a one-year contract for a team that needs just a little more offense to contend. Sure, he'd improve the Royals, but what's the use of their spending $3-4 million for maybe two or three wins?
So are their any teams that might be able to use Dye? How about.... Seattle?
Their everyday DH right now is Ken Griffey Jr., and charismatic as he is, the dude can't hit for much anymore. They plan on shifting Milton Bradley in for some time at DH, too, but since he's only going to get 350-400 ABs after injuries—and probably 250 of those will come in the field—there's still some room left.
Seattle just lost Russell Branyan, last year's home run leader, leaving their team home run leader... uh... Franklin Gutierrez. So they could use some power.
CHONE projects Dye to be worth 1.2 wins next season, hitting .259/.334/.463. It's not Herculean, but it would probably be the best slugging percentage on the team. (CHONE's got Bradley down for a .427).
So, Mariners fans, what do you think? Should Dye come to Seattle?
