Are the Yankees That Bad, Or Are the Orioles That Good?

Much is being made about the New York Yankees’ terrible start to the season, specifically the epic fail of their top two pitchers in their opening series against the Baltimore Orioles.

I get that the Yankees are the flagship franchise of Major League Baseball, so their struggles become instant ammunition for angry white journalists to fire off in prematurely-damning columns.

But is this really a question of the overpaid Yankees being that terrible, or the Baltimore Orioles being a much-improved club?

While many Orioles fans bemoaned the lack of talent in the starting rotation coming into the season, the first two outings have been nothing if not solid.

Jeremy Guthrie surprised many by not melting down in his first start on opening day, and if Koji Uehara had pitched a complete game, the Yankees might have only scored one run in yesterday’s loss.

The money is what drives the story in the Yankees’ pitching woes, but a little credit needs to go to the Orioles’ offense.

They scored no less than seven runs in two straight games now, something the Orioles haven’t done since mid-August of 2008 in road games against the Cleveland Indians and Detroit Tigers.

So this can’t be all about the Yankees pitching horribly. It’s a hard pill to swallow for baseball observers and even some Orioles fans, but this team might just be better than we expected.
