Remember the good ol' days, Houston Astros fans, when Houston contended for the N.L. Central crown and when playing the Texas Rangers meant taking two of three games?
Those days are long gone.
In fact, Houston is on the verge of finishing the season without winning a single game against the Rangers. Last night, they lost, 5-4, when the Rangers pushed a run across in the ninth inning.
Offensively, Houston did decently Wednesday—13 hits to the Rangers' 11. They also had five extra-base hits. Three of them came off the bat of Hunter Pence, who had two doubles and a home run while going four for five with two runs scored.
But former Ranger Pudge Rodriguez stole the show for Houston as he caught his record-breaking 2,227th major league game. Rodriguez also drove in two runs—unfortunately, both were for the Rangers.
Ironically, on this record-breaking night, both runs came on throwing errors. One was in the first inning and the second was in the fifth.
Looking over the game summary, Astros manager Cecil Cooper had plenty to be frustrated with. The Rangers received a gift when an Astros outfielder lost a fly ball in the sun (what, no eyeblack? No sunglasses?).
There were also nine runners left on base and a paltry one for nine with runners in scoring position.
Houston is now 29-34.
