Two opening days, two first at-bat home runs for Jason Heyward.
Last season, in what may have been the single biggest home run call of the year, Braves rookie phenom Jason Heyward went yard on his very first at-bat against Carlos Zambrano and the Chicago Cubs.
One year later, history and Heyward repeated themselves.
Heyward took a 2-1 pitch from Washington Nationals pitcher Livan Hernandez chest high and belted it over the right field fence, extending the Braves' lead to 2-0.
It was more than enough run support for Braves pitcher Derek Lowe who was solid in 5 2/3 innings of work. Lowe struck out six and allowed no runs. New Braves closer Craig Kimbrel worked the ninth inning to get his first save of the season.
Chipper Jones had the first hit of the 2011 Major League Baseball season, legging out a double to right field with two outs in the top of the first inning. One batter later, catcher Brian McCann ripped a shot up the middle bringing in Jones to put Atlanta up for good, 1-0.
Freddi Gonzalez, the former Marlins head coach picked up his first win as the new Braves coach, marking the time since 1990 that a head coach for the Braves not named Bobby Cox has won a game.
Newly acquired outfielder Jayson Werth singled in his first at bat as a Washington National, a liner up the middle. Werth finished the day 1-for-4.
