Dominic DiMaggio, who spent time as a Boston Red Sox center fielder but was overshadowed by his older brother Joe, passed away Friday at his Massachusetts home.
He was surrounded by family and a replay of Thursday night’s Sox game was on in the background.
At the age of 92, DiMaggio had seen a lot in his lifetime. I mean, the invention of the television? Microwaves? Computers? Contact lenses? It blows my mind to think about living that long.
The seven-time All Star, who still holds the record for the longest consecutive hitting streak in Boston history at 34 games, was known as the “Little Professor” due to his smaller stature and eyeglasses.
And who ended that hit streak for Dom? His big brother, of course. Joe—who set the big-league record hitting in 56 straight games—caught the tough liner in the eighth inning of a 6-3 Red Sox victory over the New York Yankees.
A lifelong Red Sox player, Dom was a career .298 hitter with 87 home runs.
