Hello and welcome to another wacky edition of Big Sports News. Today we will go deep inside MLB side of the story. Finally, after so many NFL edition articles, I have finally found some pretty good news in the MLB. I have yet to make an NBA edition but it will come soon. But please enjoy the MLB news. Very interesting I might say, though.
Pedro Martinez
A lot of teams are still interested in this 37-year-old pitcher. The Mets claim that Martinez is part of them, but I really don’t think so.
The Mets look to put Pedro at the fifth spot in the pitching rotation. But it might not happen. Martinez has spread interest in the teams that are deeply interested in him and are in need of a pitcher.
Not many teams spoke out about being interested in Pedro, but one did: the Pittsburgh Pirates.
They don’t know if they can sign him because of the money. MLB.com reported that Martinez wants a salary between $5-8 million, where the Pirates can not meet by that standard.
Martinez had only five wins and six losses with a 5.61 ERA.
Chris Duncan
The St. Louis Dispatch has reported that Cardinals' manager Tony La Russa is going to probably put Chris Duncan as a cleanup hitter, along with Ryan Ludwick and Rick Ankiel.
Duncan looks to be the most favorable choice, though.
“I think you’ve got three guys that have the kind of pop and potential danger to have those possibilities (of hitting cleanup),” La Russa said. “Play the season, and see how it materializes.”
With this, the Cardinals look to save super slugger, Albert Pujols, at the bat. Duncan has been the favorable man during Spring Training for the spot. Entering this weekend, Chris Duncan came out with a .353 batting average.
Let’s he how does. “I think Duncan is not afraid of anything,” La Russa said.
“Wherever you put him … he pushes himself. Chris in the four-spot is just a little bit more of a distraction (for him). But he’s already one of those guys who gets fired-up to produce.” He really does.
Radhames Liz
Bad news for Liz. The Baltimore Sun reported that Radhames Liz will likely be in the bullpen this year, now that he isn’t a competition in the three open slots that he is available for.
He was the team’s one-time top pitching prospect. He will make the pitching Opening Day roster, though, but he will be a reliever.
“I don’t think it’s ever for good. You never say never,” pitching coach Rick Kranitz told the newspaper. “But I think at this particular time with our needs, his quality of pitches, he’ll be able to handle that middle part of the game in the sixth and seventh innings. It’s not rocket science. He’s got to come in and throw the ball over the dish. It will be a lot easier for him in one-inning spurts, where he can kind of let it go.”
In his last two seasons with the Orioles, he has had six wins and eight losses with a 6.77 ERA. If he doesn’t make the 25 man roster, he will be pitching out of the bullpen in April at Triple-A Norfolk, according to ESPN.
Jason Schmidt
This kind of stinks for Jason. Dodgers' manager Joe Torre has made the statement that Jason Schmidt will not be in pitching rotation at the starting of this season due to his shoulder injury.
“This is all about getting him back sometime down the road,” Torre told us at Bleacher Report. “At this point, I don’t know where it is with the surgery and the whole thing. We’re looking at it like a continuing rehab.”
On Monday, Schmidt threw 42 scoreless pitches against the Oakland Athletics. With three weeks between now and opening day, Joe Torre told Bleacher Report that he won't be able to start as the fifth man in the rotation.
Now turning 36, Schmidt hasn’t played since 2007 due to his shoulder problems. So far, he has been through two shoulder operations. Will he be able to play next season?
