With the news of the release of the two-time All-Star closer, the question looms about where B.J. Ryan will end up.
Ryan, who has struggled a bit this year, will definitely be a steal for whoever picks him up.
Look to the stats. He has had over 30 saves three times in his career. He has a career 3.37 ERA and 112 saves.
Ryan, who this year has battled a left shoulder injury this year, has definitely struggled for the Jays. He is 1-1 with a 6.53 ERA and only two saves in 20 2/3 innings.
The Jays are reported as saying that they will eat the rest of Ryan's contract which consists of $15 million for the next two years. Whoever picks up Ryan will get a major steal.
A question looming is where will he end up? He will go somewhere in need of a left-handed pitcher. Ryan, who was at one time one of the best left-handed specialists of all time, will be a major steal for whoever picks him up for free.
One team that needs a left-hander includes the Chicago Cubs. John Hendry, who has no financial flexibility whatsoever, may pick up a new left-hander specialist to free up Sean Marshall to move to the rotation. Taking Marshall out of the pen to put him in the rotation for Ryan Dempster would be a great move for the Cubs.
In my opinion, the Cubs need to get Ryan. He will come at absolutely no cost to the team, and the Cubs have nothing to lose at this point in the season. They can only better themselves with the acquisition of B.J. Ryan.
