It was the worst of times, it was the worst of times...
- NOT the opening paragraph of A Tale of Two Cities
Alright, so that's not exactly the way Charles Dickens put it, in his Tale of Two Cities. Yet that's reality in Boston for fans of the 2-10 Sox these days.
It is the worst of times.
Oh, and it also truly is a tale of two cities, the two cities, of course, being Boston and New York. Yep, that's the rivalry, and you can bet Yankees fans are screaming with delight while Sox fans are just plain screaming.
So what's the point of this diatribe? Well, I'm not here to wrap my figurative arms around you and tell you everything is OK.
It's not.
I'm no hater, believe me, and so I derive absolutely no joy from the current status of your ballclub. But I can help.
You see, I'm a Cubs fan.
Look, don't worry, I'm not starting to compare your team to my Cubs. Sure, both went long stretches without a title. But once the arrow started pointing up for you, the Sox ran away and permanently hid from any of those comparisons.
The Sox are winners, the Cubs are, unfortunately, losers. I get that. But the pain of a season like this, even though it's very early, is something us Cubs fans are all too familiar with.
Yes, it's a small sample size and your Sox can still turn it around. There is simply too much talent on this club to remain under .500 for an entire season, we all know that.
But meanwhile, you have strong feelings that you need to come to grips about. Feelings of anger, sadness and confusion. Hopelessness and fear may overcome anything positive your brain may try to tell you.
So here is my unsolicited advice: look away for awhile. Yep, take some time off from baseball and enjoy other sports around you.
The Boston Celtics are starting another playoff run, you know. In fact, my Bulls and your Celtics may be meeting in what should be a terrific series at some point.
The Celtics are starting to get a bit long in the tooth, so you don't know how many more runs this team has left in it, so enjoy it while you can.
Also, in case you didn't know, the Bruins are in the NHL playoffs, though things aren't so rosy there. They trail the Canadians and their captain, Zdeno Chara, just got out of the hospital.
But hey, it's better than watching the Sox right now.
So, do what I'm doing as the Cubs suffer through yet another rough season: look away for awhile. Check back every so often, and continue to read Bleacher Report, of course, and your fine Red Sox FCs.
And who knows, you just might enjoy your self and by the time you come back, perhaps your Sox are back where they belong, in first place.
As for my Cubs? Um...hey, the weather is starting to get nice.
