The Detroit Tigers obliterated the Boston Red Sox 10-3, Saturday evening at Comerica Park.
Everything went right for the Tigers all night long.
Detroit wasted no time, striking early with a huge grand slam by way of Victor Martinez in the first inning. From that moment on, the hits kept coming.
The Tigers accumulated 15 hits on the night, shedding light on just how dominate their lineup has been throughout the year.
While the squad’s batting was phenomenal, Max Scherzer (11-0, 3.05 ERA) once again put on a marvelous display, showing why he is the best pitcher in baseball. Scherzer allowed two runs and struck out six in seven innings.
The win puts Scherzer at 11-0 on the year, becoming the first Tiger to achieve the feat.
In addition, Scherzer became the first Major League pitcher to open a season 11-0 since Roger Clemens in 1997.
For the Red Sox, Allen Webster (0-2, 11.25 ERA) struggled mightily, allowing five runs through 4.2 innings.
Although Webster’s performance was awful, the 23-year-old did some things throughout the evening that many may have overlooked.
Webster continually baffled batters with dynamite off-speed pitches early in the count. For instance, in the third inning, Miguel Cabrera struck out swinging on an 85-mph breaking ball.
Yes, Miguel Cabrera.
Many times throughout the evening, Webster faced a full count with men on base. More often than not, he was able to retire the side.
Patience is key for Boston in regards to Webster’s future. If given the proper instruction and support, Webster will become a formidable player for Boston.
Sitting atop the AL East at 45-31, the Red Sox are in good position to build on their lead in the division.
When Clay Buchholz returns to the rotation, it will be extremely difficult to contend with Boston.
