A trade that was just announced: The New York Mets have traded right fielder Ryan Church to the Atlanta Braves for struggling right fielder Jeff Francoeur.
I'd have to say the Braves win this trade, as they get a good young hitter in Church.
This is the second outfielder the Braves have acquired, the first being Nate McLouth.
So far this season, Church is hitting .280 with two home runs and 22 RBI. Church has 65 hits in 67 games.
The Braves also get to dump the terrible Jeff Francoeur, who was hitting .250 with eight home runs and 35 RBI. Francoeur has 76 hits in 82 games.
This seems like a throw-in-the-towel move by the Mets, as Francoeur's offensive numbers have dropped in every season that he's played in Major League Baseball. Despite having his best power numbers in 2006, his best all-around offensive season was probably in 2007, when he hit .293 with 19 home runs and 105 RBI.
The Braves also sent the Mets cash to complete the deal, so it's like they're saying "This guy Francoeur gets worse every season he plays, please for the love of God take him! We'll even throw in some cash!"
Church still has many good years remaining on him. This deal is a definite win for the Braves.
