MLB rumors" target="_blank">Jerry Crasnick reports for ESPN that the Houston Astros are reportedly kicking the tires on Brett Myers, which makes some sense. Myers should be a cheap alternative in 2010 with a pretty strong upside, and the ability to pitch in the rotation or out of the pen. I guess the real question is whether or not Myers is healthy enough to stand up to the rigors of a full season?
If the Astros do acquire Myers, will they place him in direct competition with Felipe Paulino during Spring Training? A battle for a rotation spot could be a very healthy thing for both of these pitchers. It would allow Paulino the opportunity to compete against premium talent and it would push Myers to focus and attempt to find his 2005 form. All things considered I think that Astros are right to be checking in on Myers, he could be a useful piece for them come 2010 and acquiring him would not preclude them from adding another pitcher to the staff. (Ben Sheets perhaps?)
