Brian Roberts and Fantasy Baseball 2010: Roberts Is Hurt, Rankings To Change?

According to Peter Schmuck of The Baltimore Sun , Brain Roberts is being reported as having a “small” herniated disk in his lower back, something he has been dealing with for about a month.

The injury is said to be not serious and, as of now, it will not require surgery. This updates a previous mention and speculation that Roberts had kidney stones and that was the cause of the month long pain in that region.

Second base is already pencil thin and, with Roberts being considered a top five second baseman, one has to agree that this is an injury very much worth paying close attention to.

Second base requires a lot of movement and a lot of speed and agility. A herniated disk, regardless of its severity, will no doubt have a huge effect—especially in a 32 year old.

Last year, Roberts hit .283/.356/.451 with 16 homers, 79 RBI, and 30 stolen bases, and it’s those stolen bases that really add some extra value to him. He was expected to do more of the same this year.

One advantage to all of this could be the sudden rise in value to guys like Ben Zobrist, Robinson Cano, Aaron Hill, and Dan Uggla—guys who offer power and speed to owners who will be shopping early.
