Arroyo Speaks on Injury, Future
Thursday, March 17
Arroyo told reporters that his rotator cuff is "significantly torn," adding that he's waiting for a comparison to his last MRI and noting that "it's not looking real good."
"It's either rehab or retire," Arroyo said regarding his options going forward.
Arroyo's Injury Could End Career
The 39-year-old Arroyo hasn't pitched in the big leagues since June 14, 2014. He underwent Tommy John surgery as a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the middle of the season and sat out all of last year while continuing to rehab.
Joel Luckhaupt noted Arroyo was the model of durability prior to that injury with 360 consecutive starts made, including at least 32 every year from 2005-13.
Given Arroyo's age and recent injury history, it seems unlikely that his career will continue. The Nationals do have rotation depth with Tanner Roark and Joe Ross likely slotting in the last two spots. Top prospect Lucas Giolito could also make an impact this season, though he will begin the year in the minors.
