The Lowell Spinners, Class-A Affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, announced their 2010 coaching staff Monday evening, welcoming back 2006 Spinners manager Bruce Crabbe as part of a completely revamped coaching staff for the back-to-back Stedler Division Champions.
Coming off back-to-back Stedler Division Championships and back-to-back playoff appearances, the first in franchise history, the entire Spinners 2009 coaching staff earned promotions.
Gary DiSarcina, the Spinners' field manager the past three seasons, became the Spinners' all-time leader in wins by a manager in 2009, finishing each of his three seasons above the .500 mark. DiSarcina was promoted this offseason to the Red Sox Minor League Infielder Coordinator position after interviewing for the Red Sox vacant first base coaching position.
Hitting coach Luis Lopez and pitching coach Kevin Walker were each promoted to the Low-A Greenville Drive. Lopez spent two seasons in Lowell, while Walker’s pitching staff set a franchise record for team earned run average in his only season in Lowell.
Crabbe returns to the Spinners' dugout in a swap of positions with DiSarcina after spending the previous three seasons as the Red Sox Minor League Infield Coordinator. In his lone season in Lowell in 2006 Crabbe recorded a 39-36 record, leading a team headlined by future Red Sox Justin Masterson, Aaron Bates and Dustin Richardson.
Crabbe will be joined by former Major League outfielder George Lombard, making his coaching debut as the Spinners' hitting coach.
Lombard, 34, was originally a second round draft pick of the Atlanta Braves in 1994, playing parts of six seasons in the major leagues with the Braves, Detroit Tigers, Tampa Bay Rays and Washington Nationals before retiring after the 2009 season. He spent the 2004 and 2005 seasons in the Red Sox organization, splitting time between Portland and Pawtucket.
Head Athletic Trainer David Herrera will return to Lowell for a second season, while the Spinners' pitching coach is still to be determined. The Spinners open their 2010 season June 18 on the road against the Vermont Lake Monsters, before returning to Lowell for their home opener Monday, June 21.
