Cardinals-Pirates: Jason's Motte's Implosion Sends St. Louis to a Loss in Opener

I have to say, I love MLB Extra Innings. I may not get anything else done this spring/summer, but it is fun to get Cardinals baseball!

Of course, the big story of the day was Jason Motte's "implosion" in the ninth to blow the save and cost the Cardinals the game, 6-4. I'm not going to get into the melee on this one. He was too pumped up coming into the game, had a long inning in the bottom of the eighth where he was not sure whether to be throwing or not, and was just a bunch of nerves.

By the Cardinal Nation reaction to his outing, I'm not surprised in the least that he was nervous. However, his fastball average was 96.3 mph per Gameday, which seems pretty low and "unhyped" to me. Perhaps his biggest problem was just hanging some pitches on a day when he couldn't blow people away.

Wainwright concerned me a bit as well. He walked five in 5.1 innings, and although he did a decent job pitching around his mistakes, it is a bit troublesome to see, as he didn't have a stellar spring. However, McClellan did look pretty decent after a horrible spring.

On the offensive side of things, Albert was Albert, and Ludwick chimed in with a nice day at the plate as well.

Word is that Colby Rasmus makes his major league debut tonight. This is not one to be missed, as we could be talking about this day years from now.
