Chicago Cubs Bit by Injury Bug Early On

Just when it seemed like all was well on the north side of Chicago, down go Randy Wells and Andrew Cashner.

Wells has a strained right forearm, which he felt Tuesday, the day after his start; Cashner has a mild strain in the back of his right rotator cuff.

Both pitchers had MRIs that revealed no structural damage in their arms.

While this is good news, they will both likely miss two weeks of action.

Wells and Cashner were both brilliant in their first start of the season. Wells struck out six in over six innings pitched while only serving up a leadoff homer to Willie Bloomquist, while Cashner—who made his major league debut Tuesday—gave up one run on two hits over 5.3 innings.

Losing guys like this can really hurt a team that is looking to get off to a good start.

Many believed the Cubs were finally catching some must needed breaks, with key injuries to key players in their division.

However, fans should have seen this coming; nothing comes easy for the Cubbies.

Luckily, the Cubs don’t need another starter until Sunday in Milwaukee and are expected to call up right-hander Casey Coleman from Triple-A Iowa.

Coleman impressed the Cubs last year going 4-2 with a 4.11 ERA over 57.0 innings pitched.

If he can pick up where he left off last year, you have to believe the Cubs have a reasonable shot at keeping the ship afloat until their health is restored.
