Even from the writer who told you that the Cubs' pitching is the teams' Achilles heel, I will not say "I told you so."
That's right, for even with the White Sox, who I picked to win the AL Central this year, they may have won easily but you won't hear any gloating.
Why? Repeat after me, IT'S ONLY ONE GAME.
I know, Carlos Zambrano was horrible and the defense was bad. Alfonso Soriano played as if he couldn't care less.
And Jeff Samardzija, who is only on a major league roster because he has a big contract (relatively speaking), like Carlos Silva, was equally bad today.
And yes, the 16-5 final score was frustrating. Still, you must keep this in perspective.
If the Cubs had won, it wouldn't mean that we're going to the World Series. Likewise, because we lost doesn't mean we suck.
Sean Marshall, who should be in the rotation, and is wasted mopping up in a blowout, was terrific, striking out five in just under three innings.
And the Cubs hit two home runs, with Marlon Byrd and Aramis Ramirez going deep.
But really, I'm not here to try and convince you that the Cubs weren't awful today.
They were.
I'm just here to remind you that one game does not a season make.
The Sox beat a really bad Indians team and the Cubs got destroyed by what should be a really solid Braves team.
Braves rookie Justin Heyward hit a three-run homer in the first swing of his major league career.
And they scored five runs, which, on a normal day, should be enough.
But Zambrano and Geo Soto both proved that losing weight doesn't always portend to having a successful season.
In fact, some cynical fans might tend to believe that this means they are no longer taking PEDs, and, in fact, Big Z's lack of outward frustration at getting shelled may be maturity.
Or it may be the lack of 'roid rage.
As fellow Bleacher Creature Ryan Alberti would say, I'm not sayin', just sayin'.
Now before you scold me for jumping to unsupported conclusions, look at yourself. Don't jump to conclusions simply because the Cubs played a stinker of a game.
It's not good, to be sure. But it's not the end of the world, either.
Meanwhile, is something physically wrong with Zambrano? While there are no specific reasons to think so, the question should be asked.
If not, then chalk it up as one bad game and move on.
I know it's hard for Cubs fans to swallow a loss like this on the Opening Day of the season, but it's the only productive thing to do.
There's always tomorrow. There's always the next century.
