Chien-Ming Wang Gets Shelled As Sox Win 8-4

I'm guessing some genius in the media will see last night's rough outing by Chien-Ming Wang and begin to wonder if there are any lasting effects from his foot injury.

Or maybe someone will assume that because he and CC Sabathia have had two successive bad starts, that maybe the front of the Yankees' rotation is in trouble.

Truth is, it was just another poor Spring Training performance.

Wang allowed seven runs (one earned) on six hits in just 1.2 innings pitched, as the Yankees lost 8-4. He gave up two long balls, a solo shot off the bat of Mike Lowell, and a two-run blast by David Ortiz.

Wang isn't worring. "I think I still need to work in the bullpen now," Wang said through an interpreter. "This is Spring Training. I'm not really worried about it."

Neither am I.

Brett Tomko pitched very well in relief, allowing just two hits and striking out five in 3.1 innings. He may slowly be working his way into that long-relief role. Tomko has a 1.74 ERA in 10.1 innings pitched this spring. He's allowed just two runs on seven hits, walked one, and struck out 10.

Kei Igawa also continues his impressive spring by throwing another shutout inning. He did allow one hit and walk a batter, but also struck out two. He hasn't allowed a run in nine innings.

Steven Jackson pitched one scoreless inning, striking out one.

Michael Dunn pitched the eighth and he gave up a run on no hits and two walks.

All the Yankees offense came in the second and third innings. They scored one in the second on an Angel Berroa RBI single. Berroa went 2-for-3 with an RBI, he's now hitting .444 for the spring.

Xavier Nady knocked in two with a double in the third. Nady was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.

Jose Molina drove in the Yankees fourth and final run with a single. He went 1-for-3 in the game with an RBI.

Cody Ransom went 1-for-3 with a triple and a run scored. Shelley Duncan also doubled, going 1-for-2 with a walk.

Justin Leone, John Rodriguez, and Doug Bernier also picked up hits.

The Yankees play their first split-squad games today. A.J. Burnett will start for the Yanks at home against the Astros at 1:15 p.m., and Phil Hughes will start against the Pirates at 1:05 ET in Bradenton, Fl. The game against the Astros will be on YES and WCBS 880.
