Chris Capuano to Yankees: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

The New York Yankees have brought back veteran pitcher Chris Capuano on a one-year contract worth $5 million.

Jack Curry of the YES Network passed along word of the deal:

New York later confirmed the move via their Twitter account:

The Yankees acquired Capuano from the Colorado Rockies ahead of the July trade deadline to bolster their rotation. He started 12 games down the stretch, going 2-3 with a 4.25 ERA and 1.31 WHIP. He struck out 55 batters in 65.2 innings.

Those numbers are right in line with his career marks (4.28 ERA and 1.34 WHIP). While the left-hander doesn't represent a major signing, he brings versatility to the staff for a reasonable price.

Exactly what role he'll play for New York in 2015 is undetermined. A lot will depend on how many more moves are on the horizon. As things stand now, he could start in the rotation and move to the bullpen once CC Sabathia and Ivan Nova return to full strength for their respective injuries.

All told, Capuano should be a moderately effective innings eater in whatever role he assumes. He's not an ace, or a lights out sort of pitcher, but he's a useful, versatile arm who can and has filled a number of roles over the years. Given that his role figures to change throughout the year, he's a solid value signing for the Yanks.
