Cincinnati, whether deserved or undeserved, has long held a reputation of racist city.
And no, that's not a photo of Joe Morgan giving a "black power" fist. He's waving.
But the photo looked silly after trying to crop it down and get the wave into the shot.
Having never lived in Cincinnati, it's tough to properly judge.
Just a hunch, but most whites would probably deny it, blacks would agree that the city has serious issues regarding racism.
Most Reds' fans by now know that he is officially here to to help the African-American communities of Cincinnati develop ball players. He is not getting hired to help those individuals become professionals, but rather to make them better people.
Better people is always a good thing, so Morgan should be applauded.
But let's face it, that wont take much of his time. A few appearances here, a few there and he'll raise some cash for the cause.
He wasn't hired to work construction, so why was he hired? Quick answer: He is a high-profile black man.
Why was he hired as a high-profile black man?
The firing of Dusty Baker is imminent.
Bob Castellini, the Reds primary owner, was a Cincinnati businessman before heading the group which ended up purchasing the Reds.
Having lived in the Queen City, he is fully aware of it's racist reputation.
This isn't to say that Castellini is a racist...in fact, far from it. In all likelihood it will be a white man, Rick Sweet, to replace Dusty.
So to save face and perhaps due to a bit of "white guilt," he needs another black man in town to show that the Reds are not a racist organization.
And who better than Morgan, a beloved member of the famed "Big Red Machine?" Perhaps this is wishful thinking for Reds' fans who want Dusty run out of town faster than Coco Cordero points to the man in the moon after recording the final out of a save.
Maybe Morgan is here to only help African-American players develop team skills and open his Honda dealership.
But for some reason this hiring smells fishy. Suffice to say, the "Spidey-Senses" of Reds' country should be somewhere close to code red.
