Joe Beimel waited and waited for a major league contract offer, but couldn’t find one. Instead, he signed a minor league deal with a team he is pretty familiar with.
Beimel signed a minor league deal with the Colorado Rockies yesterday. Beimel will make $850,000 if he makes the Rockies’ roster and he can earn another $350,000 in incentives.
With closer Huston Street and eighth inning setup man Rafael Betancourt hurting, the Rockies need as much bullpen help as possible. While Beimel may not be ready to contribute right away, he should help the Rockies in the long run.
Beimel pitched for the Rockies last season after being acquired from the Washington Nationals at the trade deadline. In 15.2 innings for Colorado, Beimel posted a 4.02 ERA and gave up 19 hits while striking out 11.
Like most left-handed pitchers, Beimel is most effective against left-handed batters. Beimel held lefties to a .258 average last year with just a .297 OBP in 105 AB’s.
Beimel will most likely be used as a situational reliever for the Rockies.
