The Colorado Rockies are looking to rebound from their Opening Day loss in Arizona.
Their pitching staff was shelled for nine runs last night, including five home runs, the first of which was given up by Aaron Cook on his third pitch to the Diamondbacks leadoff hitter, Felipe Lopez.
The Rockies squandered a day in which they got to perennial Cy Young candidate, Brandon Webb. The offense showed its firepower by scoring eight runs and hitting three home runs of their own, none of which were ever in doubt.
Chris Iannetta hit a ball close to 450 feet off of Webb to straight away center field, that followed a long blast by Troy Tulowitzki. Later, Seth Smith yanked a ball down the right field line that was never in question.
Tonight, the Rockies will try to get on the winning path by sending young flame-thrower Ubaldo Jimenez to the mound. He will oppose the Diamondbacks' Dan Haren.
Jimenez has been successful against the Diamondbacks in his short career. He owns a 0-1 record with a 2.77 ERA, not including his outing against them in game two of the NLCS in 2007 in which Jimenez pitched five-and-two-thirds shutout innings.
The Diamondbacks counter with Haren, whose split fingered fastball baffled Rockies hitters all of last season to the tune of a 3-0 record with a 3.33 ERA.
For Rockies fans, the game starts at 7:40 Mountain Time. The game is being broadcast on FSN, with the radio being done, as always, by 850 KOA.
