David Freese Injury: Updates on Angels 3B's Finger and Return

David Freese had to leave Friday's game against the Texas Rangers after being struck on the right hand with a pitch. Not surprisingly, he was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Saturday.

From the official Twitter account of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim:

According to ESPN, X-rays revealed after Friday night's game that Freese had a small, non-displaced fracture on his middle finger. The injury doesn't appear to be particularly serious, however, and Freese doesn't expect to be out for long, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register:

Freese hasn't exactly been lighting it up offensively this year, hitting .202 with two home runs and eight RBI on the season, so his absence won't exactly derail the Angels' offense. He had begun heating up a bit in late April, however, so he'll want to return quickly and regain the momentum he had built.

In his stead, Luis Jimenez will get another chance to prove he can hack it at the major league level. In 35 appearances with the Angels over the last two seasons, he's hit .260 with five RBI. He'll need to do a bit better than that if he wants to create a larger role for himself on this team.

Recent call-up Grant Green, who is primarily a second baseman and outfielder after being drafted as a shortstop, replaced Freese at third and could be in line for playing time at the position as well.
