Carlos Delgado’s injured hip doesn’t seem to be getting better, and at some point this weekend, the Mets will be deciding whether or not to put the lefty slugger on the Disabled List. Delgado hasn’t appeared in a game since May 10, and the Mets’ bench has been tested heavily because of it.
The Mets have played in two extra inning games this week, and they have emptied their bench twice. It doesn’t make sense to me why they won’t just give Delgado some rest. Before the season started, the guy to promote would be a piece of cake.
Nick Evans hit very well in spring, but since he was sent down to the minors, he hasn’t been able to hit his way out of a paper bag, and the team has even gone as far as to send him down to extended spring training to help him get his game back.
Another guy who would be considered for Delgado’s roster spot would be Mike Lamb, who the Mets picked up off of the garbage heap. He would probably be a serviceable pinch hitter, but he belongs in AAA.
Another interesting scenario would be to call up the Mets’ prized hitting prospect in Fernando Martinez. This is the guy they refused to include in the Santana deal.
With Delgado going down, Tatis will likely fit at first base, and this could be the Mets’ chance to take a long look at the kid who is certainly holding his own in the minors. The guy that many used to call “The Teenage Hitting Machine” is hitting .275 in the minors. He is known to possess pop, but a lot of people say that the Mets would be reluctant to bring him up this early.
Such a promotion would bring a lot of buzz to the clubhouse. The fans have been waiting a long time to see this kid debut, and a new face could be exactly what this team needs to succeed. I think the team will be more wary of the service time than anything, but if Delgado goes on the disabled list, this could be a golden opportunity to see what kind of game Fernando Martinez has.
