Report: New York Mets Considering Fowler for Outfield

Wednesday, Dec. 2

ESPN insider Buster Olney provided the buzz on Fowler, but indicated the Mets are placing a higher open-market priority on Kansas City Royals second baseman Ben Zobrist.

New York got a close look at both players in the playoffs en route to a World Series berth. The Mets swept Chicago before losing in five games to the Royals in the Fall Classic.

Fowler hit a career-high 17 home runs to go with 29 doubles, eight triples and 20 stolen bases in 2015.

The 29-year-old's speed is an asset on the basepaths, though he does have a rather high strikeout rate (154 Ks this past season) and isn't the most consistent fielder. He has posted defensive WAR ratings of -1.8 and -1.0 over the past two seasons respectively (h/t Baseball-Reference.com).

With rumors flying around that All-Star outfielder Yoenis Cespedes is highly unlikely to return and second baseman Daniel Murphy not in the Mets' future plans, New York is wisely working to address two key spots on the roster.

If it doesn't ultimately work out for Fowler in the Big Apple, he has enough tantalizing traits to draw interest from multiple alternative suitors.
