Drew Pomeranz Injury: Updates on A's Pitcher's Hand, Return After Punching Chair

Drew Pomeranz struggled against the Texas Rangers on Monday, but it was a chair that gave him more issues than the Rangers lineup did.

Per this ESPN.com report, Pomeranz broke his right hand by punching a chair after Oakland’s 14-8 loss Monday. The chair clearly got the best of the encounter, as Pomeranz is heading to the 15-day disabled list.

At least it was his non-throwing hand.

He commented on the lapse of judgment, via ESPN.com:

I just let my emotions take over me, and I did something stupid. It sucks. Obviously, I didn't mean for it to happen. It sucks because I want to play, I want to pitch. I'm trying to win games and help the team out. Obviously, I'm not helping the team out when I do something stupid like that.

Hopefully, I'll be back as soon as possible. This is the first time I've broken a bone, though, so I don't know.

I play it over and over in my headwish I hadn't done it. I was walking up to the clubhouse and was just mad.

Sports writer Jim Peters offers some advice for Pomeranz and other young players:

Pomeranz checks in with a 5-4 record, but he struggled mightily against Texas. He gave up eight hits and eight runs with only four strikeouts on the day. His roster spot will be filled by Evan Scribner, who was called up from Triple-A.

Oakland currently leads the American League West over the likes of the Los Angeles Angels and Seattle Mariners, so losing any part of its pitching staff could prove costly as the summer heats up and teams jockey for position.

It remains to be seen if the injury will have any long-term ramifications on his delivery, but I think it's safe to say he won't be punching chairs again anytime soon.

Check back for more updates as they develop.
