Clay Buchholz: His future's so bright he's gotta wear shades!
The first time I interviewed Clay Buchholz (back in 2007), I asked him if he envisioned getting involved with a particular charity when he made it to the big leagues (a la Curt Schilling and his commitment to ALS).
Clay told me that he absolutely intended to be involved with charities, especially those involved in the fights against cancer and / or Alzheimer’s disease (which claimed the life of his grandmother).
True to his word, the Red Sox future ace has teamed with The Jimmy Fund and will serve as team spokesman for its “Rally Against Cancer” event on April 6th (you can find details here ).
The Red Sox and The Jimmy Fund held a brief press conference yesterday to promote “Rally Against Cancer”, and, as you might expect, Buchholz was in attendance. Explaining his association with RAC, he said:
“I’ve seen the faces of the kids whenever I’ve walked into the hospital, and (I’ve seen) what it means for somebody on the Red Sox to go in there with those kids… It’s an extraordinary thing that you get to be a part of, as far as being somebody who they look up to. These kids are going through a lot of trouble and a lot of pain and anything we can do to help suppress that, (that’s what we should do).”
Red Sox President / CEO Larry Lucchino was in attendance at the press briefing. During his remarks he let it slip that Buchholz and wife Lindsay Clubine, the former Deal Or No Deal model, are expecting their first child in August.
Congrats to Clay and Lindsay.
