Extra baseball every once in a while is okay, but right about now the Round Rock Express are likely pretty sick of having to stick it out for extra innings.
Since Monday’s first pitch, Round Rock (the Houston Astros’ Triple-A affiliate) has battled through three straight extended games...as they aim for an extra innings-free contest (and a victory) this evening when the Express host the Omaha Royals.
By the time I decided to post this piece, Round Rock had thankfully held on to beat Omaha 5-2 in a normal nine inning matchup, with Wesley Wright picking up the win and Yorman Bazardo (Astros rehab assignment) notching a save.
Sitting in seats courtesy of Equipment Depot, my wife (who works for the company), three-year-old daughter and I were able to attend Tuesday’s night game between the Express and Royals.
And although the three of us left to make the trek back to Waco when the ninth inning ended, Round Rock went on to win the game in 10 innings.
As a side note, a future story idea on the Express would focus on what goes on behind the scenes, from the video board in the outfield, to broadcasting in the booth, to updates on the Round Rock website and television.
However, I digress. Regardless of the Express holding a poor overall record at 5-10, the game was a blast; and it was a great opportunity to get to know the future stars of tomorrow through MLB’s minor league system.
Here are five personal observations from Tuesday night’s game in Round Rock…
