John Sterling: A Gaze into the Heart, Soul, and Mouth of Yankees Radio

Most fans of baseball tend to recognize Mel Allen, Phil Rizzuto, or Bob Sheppard as the historical voice of the New York Yankees.

For as long as America’s pastime is continued, cleats, pine tar, bats, and high socks will be as American as hot dogs and apple pie.

On the same token, the aforementioned voices of Yankee past will forever be linked to the Bronx as definitively as Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, and Lou Gehrig.

David Wright and Mets Respond to Minaya's "Lack Of Edge" Statement

Omar Minaya has drawn a lot of ire from fans for his questionable acquisitions and lack of what people had been demanding (Manny Ramirez and Derek Lowe come to mind).

Minaya said that his leaders are either too quiet (Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado) or have smiles on their faces (Jose Reyes and David Wright).

Much has been said about Beltran and Delgado and the manner in which they conduct themselves quietly in public, but behind closed doors. they are a vocal force in the clubhouse.

New York Yankees and Alex Rodriguez Need Each Other

2009 was supposed to be a “Return to Glory” for the New York Yankees. They were opening a grand new ballpark. They spent wildly in the offseason on the three premier free agents on the open market, putting Pinstripes on Mark Teixeira, CC Sabathia, and AJ Burnett.
Despite the positive news, the Yankees’ offseason was overshadowed by the many tales of Alex Rodriguez. Steroids. Madonna. Hip surgery.

MLB Power Rankings: May 2 Edition

Team of the Week: San Francisco Giants (pictured above)

Bust of the Week: San Diego Padres

As we approach the end of the fifth week of Major League Baseball's 2009 Regular Season, teams are beginning to settle in and the contenders are beginning to emerge from the pretenders.

What To Do With Oliver Perez

Oliver Perez has certainly been a bit of a project since he became a Met. There have been some days in which he looks ike an ace, and there have been others that make people think that he shouldn’t be in the major leagues. So far this season, there has been more of the latter.

He has only lasted five or more innings once, and that was when he earned his only victory of the season against Dan Diego on April 15. He has already walked 15 batters in just 19.1 innings, and he is going to need to get his act together if he wants to stay in this rotation.

Another Road Loss For Rockies

Good teams find ways to win close games. Right now, the Colorado Rockies are not a good team.

Despite an outstanding effort from Ubaldo Jimenez, the Rockies dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker to the Giants on Friday night in San Francisco. The loss moves the Rockies to 8-13 on the season, 4-8 on the road.

Of the 13 losses, five of them have come by one-run margins.

An inability to get hits at key moments continues to plague the Rockies.

Behind the Mic: New York Mets Have Upperhand

The challenge of playing professional sports in New York is no secret.  But what is not generally realized is how difficult it is to be a professional sportscaster in the Big Apple.

But, as they are on the field, the New York Mets are up to the challenge in the booth.  Both on the screen and on the radio, the Mets have themselves a great group of Major League announcers.

Momentum Brewing in the Bronx?

So far this season, the New York Yankees pitching staff could be described as baseball’s spaghetti western: they’re “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.”

Yet, after their rousing, come-from-behind-despite-leadng-early 10-9 win over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim of Orange County of California of the United States of America, the Yankees have won four straight, and they seem to be building momentum.

Around the Majors (May 1)

Are Jhonny Peralta, Brandon Phillips and Geovany Soto warming up?  Clayton Kershaw and Jake Peavy certainly turned their luck around.  Joe Mauer returned with a bang.  Let’s look at these stories and all the rest from yesterday’s games.
