When the Colorado Rockies signed Ty Wigginton in the offseason, they were hoping he would fill in for Ian Stewart or Todd Helton if one of them needed a day off or if they were facing a tough left-handed pitcher. Now, he might be getting regular playing time for the Rockies in April.
Stewart, the Rockies’ regular third baseman, hasn’t played in a spring training game since late-February because of an MCL sprain. He’s played a grand total of three innings this spring.
There’s a good chance that Stewart could start the season on the DL. If that’s the case, then look for Wigginton to take over at third while Stewart is out.
Wigginton hit .248/.312/.415 with 22 HR in 154 games for the Baltimore Orioles last season. He slumped big time in the second half, but he might be worth picking up at the end of your fantasy draft if you have roster space. He qualifies at three positions (1B, 2B and 3B) and if he gets regular ABs in Colorado, he could put up some numbers.
Not a bad short-term solution if you need it at the beginning of the season.
