Many owners are panicking early on in the fantasy baseball season, and it is your chance to buy low on some great players that are experiencing slow starts. Here is a list of a few of the players that are being dropped in a ton of leagues, but can still turn a nice profit for your roster and contribute meaningfully in 2009.
Jason Motte, Relief Pitcher - St. Louis Cardinals: Motte lost the closer job early, and he is being cut like crazy in most fantasy baseball leagues. Take advantage of the chance to buy him low, especially if you are in a deep league.
The STL closing situation is still far from settled, and Motte is the most talented guy in the bullpen (see my previous post on this).
Justin Upton, Outfielder - Arizona Diamondbacks: Upton is a solid young outfielder who has not swung well coming out of the gate. However, he is young; at the age of 21, he may need a little more time to develop his swing.
That being said, the upside on Upton is 25-30 home runs with a .280 batting average. Buy low.
Randy Johnson, Starting Pitcher - San Francisco Giants: Age 45. 144 DL days in the last three years. Scared away yet? Of course not! Johnson is a great strikeout pitcher who still has a great skill set behind the scary early-season numbers.
The numbers you should focus on: 12/4 K/BB. He could be a nice fifth starter for your team this year, so get him!
David DeJesus, Outfield - Kansas City Royals: Why people are cutting this guy, I don’t know. DeJesus is at the prime age of 29, can bat .300, and can contribute 10-15 home runs and 10 stolen bases in a prime spot in the emerging KC lineup.
DeJesus has always been an under-appreciated commodity, but he could heat up quickly. Get ahold of him if you can!
