Florida Marlins' Jorge Cantu Is as Hot as They Come

What is up with Jorge Cantu?

He now has at least one hit and one RBI in each of the Florida Marlins' first nine games.

That is a record. That's right, he is the first player to accomplish that in the history of Major League Baseball.

Mike Piazza of the New York Mets has the longest streak of a hit and an RBI. On Jun. 14, 2000, Piazza went 2-for-5 with three RBI against the Chicago Cubs. Then for 15 consecutive games, ending on Jul. 2, he managed to get at least one hit and at least one RBI. 

During his streak Piazza batted .349 with eight HRs and 28 RBI. He was 22-for-63 and also scored 14 runs.

Cantu started his streak on Opening Day, Apr. 5, at Citi Field against the New York Mets. He was 1-for-3 with one RBI that day. 

In two different games he has had two hits, once against the Mets and once against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

In that same game against the Dodgers, Cantu also collected five RBI.

His other multi-RBI game was Monday night against the Cincinnati Reds when he knocked in two.

He is currently behind only Albert Pujols in RBI. Pujols has 15 and Cantu 14.

With runners in scoring position he is batting an even .400 with one HR and 11 RBI in 15 ABs.

Cantu has had two 100-plus RBI seasons in his career. In 2005 with Tampa Bay he hit 28 HRs with 117 RBI. In 2009 with the Marlins he hit 16 HRs and drove in 100. In 2008 he hit 29 HRs and drove in 95.

Over his seven-year career, his 162 game averages are .278 with 22 HRs and 101 RBI.

The Cincinnati Reds had him in the tail end of the 2007 season for 27 games. He batted .298 with one HR and nine RBI. Apparently the Reds couldn't find a place to put him, or failed to see the value in him.

At any rate, he has become one of the most feared men in MLB with men on base. He will be facing Aaron Harang of the Reds tonight, and giving up long balls has been what Harang does best, giving up four in 12 innings pitched. Look for Cantu to take him deep tonight.

When will his streak come to a close? I don't know, but I doubt if it will be tonight.
