Game Recap: San Diego Padres Defeat Los Angeles Dodgers 10-7 in Series Opener

With a chance to go ahead by 7.5 games in the NL West, the Los Angeles Dodgers lost to a spirited San Diego Padres team Thursday night 10-7.

The Padres posted 15 hits in a game that featured multiple momentum shifts.

Dodgers' starting pitcher Mat Latos had trouble right out of the gate, allowing two runs on hits by Justin Upton and Jedd Gyorko in the first inning. His night would not get better.

Latos went on to give up eight hits and four earned runs in just four innings pitched.

But the Dodgers came alive in the sixth inning, scoring five runs to take a 7-4 lead.

The Padres then found some good fortune in the eighth inning, as Upton was called safe at second base on what should've been called a double play for Los Angeles.

Second baseman Jose Peraza clearly had his foot on the bag before Upton got there, but Upton was called safe. The play was reviewed and, to the Dodgers' dismay, the ruling was upheld.

It was the beginning of a nightmarish inning for L.A., as the Padres went on to score four times in the eighth. San Diego amassed a 10-7 lead it would not give up.

Shortstop Corey Seager was a bright spot for the Dodgers in his major league debut, posting two hits, two runs scored and two RBI.

Padres' starting pitcher Colin Rea entered Thursday's game with an ERA above 5.0, but the Indiana State prospect held his ground against the Dodgers, allowing four hits and two runs in five innings pitched.

Rea was pulled not long after being hit by a line-drive in the upper arm.

The Dodgers remain 6.5 games ahead of the San Francisco Giants in the NL West after the Colorado Rockies defeated the Giants 11-3 on Thursday.
