George Springer Injury: Updates on Astros Star's Head and Return

Houston Astros outfielder George Springer will not play Wednesday against the Texas Rangers after crashing into the outfield wall Tuesday.

Continue for updates.

Springer Will Not Play Wednesday

Tuesday, May 5

The team’s official Twitter account shared the news that Springer will not play Wednesday and also noted that Colby Rasmus will start in his place. Springer left Tuesday’s contest after robbing Adrian Beltre of extra bases with an incredible catch at the wall.

Major League Baseball provided fans with a look at the play:

George Halim of The Score and Brian McTaggart of MLB.com added more context to the injury:

Springer has four home runs and 12 RBI on the season, but he makes his mark on the defensive side of the ball. The 25-year-old outfielder has a flair for the dramatic with the glove and earned the praise of Richard Justice of MLB.com:

Houston lost the last two games to the Rangers, but it is still off to a red-hot start for the season. However, it needs Springer in the long-term lineup if it hopes to parlay its early division lead into a spot in the pennant chase in August and September.

Despite the four home runs, Springer is hitting less than .200 in the early going. His absence will be felt most in the field, as evidenced by the catch that knocked him out of the game.

Rasmus actually adds more pop to the lineup statistically (.257 average with five home runs and 10 RBI) and should pick up the slack in the short term, but it is difficult to replace a lockdown defender in the outfield.

Springer has taken plenty of runs away with his glove already, and the Astros need that to continue moving forward this season.
