Gettin' Ahead: New York Renames Mr. Mets BJ Club

The Mets made a great decision when they decided to offer low priced tickets in the 300-level in the area formally known as Mr. Mets Landing. The move was a nice gesture, as it would make games more affordable to families. The move seemed to be family friendly.

The team even found a sponsor for the new low cost sections. BJ’s Wholesale Club decided to support the section. Then, someone in the Mets marketing department, either thinking it was hilarious or not knowing about double-entendre, decided to rename the area Mr. Mets BJ Club.

While it was nice of BJ’s Wholesale Club to offer to sponsor the section, it is pretty obvious why it is not a good idea. I do not know of a single high school boy who doesn’t giggle or crack a joke when he drives by a BJ’s store.

The team eventually realized that they had made a bit of an error when it came to the name they had chosen. The team decided that it was in their best interests to rename the area.

They decided to maintain the sponsorship with BJ’s Wholesale and kept their name in the area. However, the team made sure that this iteration of the name was much more family friendly. The area, going through its second name change in a week, is now known as BJ’s Club-house.

This could have been an attempt for the team to lighten up fan’s moods before the season started. However, I still find it hard to believe that the Mets, with a team full of employees with marketing degrees, could not figure out why this was not a good idea.
